10 Must-Do Activities in Uyuni

1. Salar de Uyuni

The Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world, covering over 10,000 square kilometers. During the rainy season (December to March), it turns into a giant mirror, reflecting the sky in an almost surreal way. It’s a prime spot for unique photos and experiencing the feeling of infinity.

2.Isla Incahuasi

Right in the heart of the salt flat, Isla Incahuasi is covered with giant cacti that can grow up to 10 meters tall. The island offers amazing panoramic views of the salt flats and is a great place to walk around and explore.

3. . Train Cementery

Just outside Uyuni, you’ll find a graveyard of rusting trains dating back to the 19th century. These trains were abandoned after the mining industry collapsed. It’s a nostalgic spot and very popular with photographers.

4. Colorful Lagoons

On a tour of the Salar de Uyuni, you’ll often visit various colorful lagoons like Laguna Colorada and Laguna Verde. These lagoons have stunning colors due to the presence of minerals and algae, and they’re home to flamingos and other Andean wildlife.

5. Sol de Mañana Geysers

This geothermal field, located at an altitude of about 5,000 meters above sea level, is active with fumaroles and bubbling mud pools. The best time to visit is early in the morning when the contrast between the hot steam and the cold Andean air is most spectacular.

6.Tunupa Volcano

Standing at 5,321 meters tall, the Tunupa Volcano is on the northern edge of the salt flat. It offers hiking opportunities and panoramic views of the salt flat and the surrounding area. At the base of the volcano, you can also visit the village of Coquesa and its pre-Columbian mummies.

7. Ojo de Perdiz

This spot in the Lípez region is famous for its desert landscape with surreal rock formations. It’s an ideal place to see Andean wildlife, including vicuñas, vizcachas, and migratory birds.

8. Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve

This reserve is a natural paradise that hosts a wide variety of flora and fauna. Besides the colorful lagoons, you can see the Stone Tree, a rock formation that looks like a tree, and other interesting geological formations.

9. Salt Hotel

One unique experience is staying in a hotel made entirely of salt blocks. These hotels offer a unique and comfortable experience in the middle of the salt flat, with all the necessary amenities.

10.Llama and Salt Museum

Located in Colchani, near Uyuni, this museum provides a detailed insight into the importance of llamas in Andean culture and salt production in the region. It’s a fascinating place to learn more about the local history and economy.

Each of these activities offers a unique and memorable experience in Uyuni, allowing you to enjoy the diversity and beauty of this spectacular destination.
